Nine qualities

Shelterhood’s ethos can be synthesised in nine distinct but complementary properties.

Shelters smaller than tiny.

Frugal, raw and basic, they welcome those who are not looking for status but enduring habitable companions. All these shelters do well to the smallest room.
Because even at home you may need some shelter.

Designed for play.

For infants, children, parents and grandparents.

You can discover new unforeseen configurations.

You can create and tell stories with the animaloids, humanoids, huts and furniture. They help you to bond while having a dynamic and intimate interaction with them.

Built to move. You and your kin can take them with you wherever you lay your head.

Light, minimal and reusable flat packaging that is the size of an europallet.

From now on, it is easy and cheap to take your furniture with you when you move from place to place, and from generation to generation.

For foreigners, strangers and immigrants, who know it’s ok to feel out of place.

This shelter family is a result of a long research on DfMADRn (Design for manufacture, assembly, disassembly and reassembly), where the reassembly can be carried through endlessly over a very long period of time.

All components come together by geometry, fabricated with a very precise tolerance to make the process smooth and easy and yet get a strong structure. As no nails, screws or glue are involved, you can put together and dismantle them daily in just a few seconds, freeing up space and time. It takes the same time to disassemble a chair than to move it aside.

All components share the same geometric grammar commonalities, which ensure that all present and future models can collaborate with each other. Each component has at least two functions and belongs to at least two models, offering multiple configurations, storage and transport possibilities.

Some of the components for infants (size 1) can be reconfigured into shelters for children (size 2) or grown-ups (size 3), radically expanding the versatility of each component. Each model works in synergy with the whole family.

All models can be customised to your specific needs, for you, your school’s community, or your company headquarters.

Just get in touch and tell us what you need.

We only make on demand. The lack of stocks allow us to be more agile. We have all the necessary plywood boards with us anyway, so each order can be ready to be sent to you in no more than two weeks.

All designs have an equivalent CNC routing time, so we can offer in bulk pricing, by the board.

Our research on nesting design principles allows us a radical material optimisation, making the most of each board, therefore minimising waste: no plywood useless offcuts, no wasted routing time. Most parts share one cut, maximising each bid life, accelerating the cutting process up.

The biggest offcuts become gifts for you, so you get much more for the same price. In size 1 models, these offcuts are toys. In size 2, homeware. In size 3, kitchenware or office goods.

The 0.8% of material waste in each board is basically sawdust, that we use to warm our workshop up in winter.

At Shelterhood we develop and implement a planned endurance policy. All our models and components are made to last, and are very hard to break.

Ageing with you, they allow time’s patina, that will slowly change the color of wood, and welcome all the traces of use during their very long life.

Designed for ten generations, so that each model becomes part of a timeless family legacy, a nomadic heritage for your kin.

All our wood comes from responsibly-managed FSC forests, where no more trees are felled than the forest can reproduce naturally.

Even though we constantly keep refining each component and model, the joints geometries remain, so that you can always get replacement parts if you eventually need them in the far future.
